Ammonium Perchlorate is an inorganic compound with the formula NH4ClO4. It is a colourless or white solid that is soluble in water. It is a powerful oxidiser. Combined with a fuel, it can be used as a rocket propellant called ammonium perchlorate composite propellant. That is its main application, and has been used by space programmes the world over for decades due to its powerful oxidisation qualities. It is even used to produce ‘breakable’ adhesives, because Ammonium Perchlorate degrades at 300 °C, breaking the adhesive apart.

Flammability: 0 – This means the substance will not readily burn under typical fire conditions. However, it still has its risks when it is exposed to fire. During combustion, it has the potential to release toxic gases and even explode when exposed to shock or friction. It should be stored away from clothing and potential fire hazards.

Health: 1 – Exposure to Ammonium Perchlorate can cause significant irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. It can also cause damage to the eyes and specific organs. If the substance gets into the eyes, rinsing the eyes for several minutes is essential to minimise, and hopefully eliminate the risk of pain and damage.

Reactivity: 4 – Ammonium Perchlorate and an extremely powerful oxidiser. The substance decomposes at 130°C and explodes at 380°C, and is extremely sensitive to very minor frictional heating. A spatula stirring in a beaker has caused sufficient frictional heating to lead to an explosion. The handling of Ammonium Perchlorate must be done with extreme sensitivity.

It's recommended to consult the specific Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for accurate and up-to-date information for a particular product.
